摘要：This paper exploits the oral and communicative nature of earnings conference calls to investigate whether discussions on climate change influence corporate environmental performance. Using a sample of 6421 firms from 27 countries/regions, we find strong and robust evidence that climate-related communications are positively associated with firms' environmentally beneficial investments and also lead to better environmental profiles. The results remain valid with a series of robustness checks. Further analyzes on the implementation of mandatory disclosure regulations in the EU area show an unexpectedly crowding-out effect. In other words, firms disclose less information in the earnings conference calls when a disclosure mandate is introduced, leading to relatively poorer environmental performance. Overall, this research documents that climate-related communications play a crucial and unique role in affecting corporate environmental behavior. It also indicates that regulators should be more careful to avoid unwanted policy effects when mandatory disclosure rules are introduced.

本文利用盈利电话会议的口头和交流特性，研究气候变化讨论是否影响企业的环境绩效。基于来自27个国家/地区的6421家企业样本，我们发现稳健的证据表明，气候相关的沟通与企业的环境友好投资呈正相关，并且还能提升企业的环境形象。通过一系列稳健性检验，结果仍然成立。对欧盟地区强制披露规定实施的进一步分析显示出意外的挤出效应。换言之，当引入披露强制要求时，企业在盈利电话会议中披露的信息更少，导致其环境绩效相对较差。总体而言，本研究表明气候相关沟通在影响企业环境行为方面发挥关键且独特的作用。它还提示监管机构在引入强制披露规则时应更为谨慎，以避免产生不期望的政策效果。
